A cidade de Barreirinhas \u00e9 considerada a \u00abporta de entrada\u00bb para os Len\u00e7\u00f3is Maranhenses. A origem do seu nome est\u00e1 ligada \u00e0s paredes de barro (argila) existentes nas margens do Rio Pregui\u00e7as. Pelo fato das paredes, \u00e0s vezes, serem ladeadas por dunas de areia, a regi\u00e3o acabou ficando popularmente conhecida como \u201cBarreirinhas\u201d. Esse termo, por sua vez, j\u00e1 era utilizado na regi\u00e3o no fim do s\u00e9culo XVII, bem antes da cria\u00e7\u00e3o do munic\u00edpio.<\/p>

Na d\u00e9cada de 70 a cidade experimentou o primeiro surto de mudan\u00e7as sociais provocadas, principalmente, pela descoberta do potencial petrol\u00edfero e g\u00e1s do bloco de Barreirinhas. Considera-se como o primeiro surto de crescimento acelerado da cidade, o surgimento de bairros como Canequinho, Cebola e Aeroporto. E na d\u00e9cada de 1990 ocorreu um novo surto de crescimento atrav\u00e9s da ampla divulga\u00e7\u00e3o das belezas naturais da regi\u00e3o, a exemplo do Parque Nacional dos Len\u00e7\u00f3is Maranhenses, Cabur\u00e9, Atins e Mandacaru.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The city of Barreirinhas is considered the \u00abgateway\u00bb to Len\u00e7\u00f3is Maranhenses. The origin of its name is linked to the mud walls (clay) on the banks of the Pregui\u00e7as River. Because the walls are sometimes flanked by sand dunes, the region ended up being popularly known as \u201cBarreirinhas\u201d. This term, in turn, was already used in the region at the end of the 17th century, well before the creation of the municipality.<\/p>

In the 1970s, the city experienced the first outbreak of social changes caused, mainly, by the discovery of the oil and gas potential of the Barreirinhas block. It is considered the first spurt of accelerated growth in the city, the emergence of neighborhoods such as Canequinho, Cebola and Aeroporto. And in the 1990s there was a new growth spurt through the wide dissemination of the region’s natural beauties, such as the Len\u00e7\u00f3is Maranhenses, Cabur\u00e9, Atins and Mandacaru National Parks.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
