Não se sabe ao certo a origem do topônimo. Alguns procuram justificá-la. Poderia ser corruptela de “chavascal” ou seria um derivado de “chave”, chaval que quer dizer: “lugar que fecha um território”, o que seria plenamente aplicável ao mencionado lugar que se situa próximo ao limite com o Piuaí, uma espécie de recanto ao cotovêlo. A região foi primitiva ocupada pelo índios tremembés. Seus primeiros povoadores foram homens vindos de Iboaçu no idos de 1873, dentre eles o Pe. Antônio Carneiro da Cunha Araújo considerado o principal fundador de Chaval.
The origin of the toponym is not known for certain. Some try to justify it. It could be a corruption of “chavascal” or a derivative of “chave”, chaval which means: “place that closes a territory”, which would be fully applicable to the mentioned place that is located close to the limit with Piuaí, a kind of nook at the elbow. The region was primitively occupied by the Tremembé Indians. Its first settlers were men from Iboaçu in 1873, among them Fr. Antônio Carneiro da Cunha Araújo considered the main founder of Chaval.
